Adam Cohen’s fascination with color and composition started when he was a child growing up in Englewood Cliffs in Northern New Jersey. At a very early age Adam studied with Lili Marzell (one of the progressive 1960’s Provincetown artists who worked with Hans Hofmann and Helen Frankenthaler. Lili Marzell’s approach to teaching art was to look within and be true to ones self. Cohen earned his BFA at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art at Temple University, SVA and abroad in Rome.
In his recent essay on the work of Adam Cohen, art critic Carter Ratcliff describes his paintings as “Tumultuous Harmonies.” Carter continues by saying: “A painting by Adam Cohen is like a sudden burst of light. Vision is dazzled by a surface alive with color, swarming with incident. As you approach the canvas, it feels as if it were coming forward to meet you, to immerse you in a field of visual energy. In all of Cohen’s recent paintings, the marks’ disruptive force both accentuates and challenges the harmonies that connect underlying colors into a unified field. Calm makes a tentative peace with exhilarated energy and the emotional stakes are raised to new heights of intensity. And we find, happily, that nothing is certain here except the inexhaustible versatility of Cohen’s images.”
