Opening this week at Margaretville’s Longyear Gallery is “Artists Choose Artists 2019,” Longyear’s tenth invitational show featuring the work of both Longyear Gallery members and some of their favorite guest artists working in different media. The Artists’ Reception will take place Saturday, February 16th, from 3-6 p.m.

The works on display will include local, regional, and city artists, each chosen by a gallery artist to create a dynamic visual dialogue for exhibition. This year’s invited artists include Marshall Baer, Jane Beckwith, Lillian Block, Leslie Brill, Marie Cole, Victoria Deletrain, Patrick Dougher, Robin Factor, Sandra Finkenberg, Diana Freedman, Gail Freund, Tabitha Gilmore-Barnes, Nicholas Johansen, Kate Kennedy, Matthias Kern, Laura Sue King, Jonas Kyle, Judith Lamb, Richard LaPresti, Claire Lofrese, Anthony Manzo, Sarah Manzo, Miguel Martinez-Riddle, Amy Masters, Harry McCarthy, Bonnie Mitchell, Joanna Murphy, Linda Palfreyman, Kevin David Palfreyman, Guyan Porter, Lesley Powell, Ted Sheridan, Val Sivilli, Walter Starch, Barbara Taff, Alix Hallman Travis, Andrew Tully, Leo Warchol, and Peter Yamaoka. The work of these artists varies in style and vision, from Hamden artist Judith Lamb’s haunting oil paintings to the abstract paintings of former Longyear member Amy Masters and ceramics by former Longyear member Peter Yamaoka.

The work of Longyear’s Gallery’s 32 current members will also appear in this exhibition. Each artist works in different media, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, ceramic, and photography. Members have been planning this invitational exhibition since last year’s successful invitational show. “It’s an exciting exhibition since we’re able to invite our artist friends to show their work with us each year,” notes gallery member Ann Lee Fuller, “and it inspires our own work as well.” Photographer and Longyear Gallery member Elaine Mayes agrees, adding “It’s also a pleasure to be able to use our gallery to bring these artists to the attention of our local Catskill community.” Members are very pleased that Longyear Gallery received second place as one of the best art galleries both in Margaretville and in the entire area.

Upcoming spring Longyear Gallery shows include a “Members Group Show and Printmaking Show” along with Introduction shows by two of the gallery’s newest members, Alethea Maguire-Cruz and Deborah Ruggerio, from March 22rd to April 14th, with the Artists’ Reception on Saturday, March 23rd from 3-6 p.m.; Elaine Grandy’s solo exhibition from April 19th3 to May 14th, with the Artist’s Reception on Saturday, April 20th from 3-6 p.m.; and Linda Larier’s solo exhibition from May 17thto June 10th, with the Artist’s Reception on Saturday, May 18th from 3-6 p.m. All solo exhibitions include group shows by Longyear Gallery members.
